"By learning safe cycling techniques now [our students] will be safer cyclists in the future. Eventually, when they become drivers, they will learn how to better see bicycles on the road making them both safer drivers and safer cyclists. It also encourages students to get exercise outside of school. Bicycling is a lifelong sport; you can do it when you're young or do it when you're old. And the parents LOVE that they are learning to ride safely. I can't wait for Basics of Bicycling to come back next year." - Jennifer McCloughan, P.E. teacher at Maplewood Elementary, one of the newest locations of our Basics of Bicycling program in Edmonds

Tuesday, Dec. 6, 7 p.m. Back for another year of hilarious, endearing and insightful storytelling, Joe Kurmaskie, also known as the Metal Cowboy, will be making an appearance at REI for one night only to regale and delight with stories from his new book, A Guide to Falling Down in Public: Finding Balance On and Off the Bicycle. Joe's stories will commemorate beautiful wrecks on five continents, the extraordinary people he met along the way and all the awe-inspiring, sweat-soaked miles ridden in-between. If you've seen him before, you know how entertaining a night with the cowboy can be. If not, you're in for a treat. This will be the Metal Cowboy's only scheduled appearance for Cascade Bicycle Club for the next 12 months, so don't miss it! [more...]

Earn-a-Bike is in full-swing this fall, with 30 students enrolled at Global Connections and YES! Foundation of White Center. 25 students are waiting with anticipation to earn their own bike starting in January and February. Due to a high demand, the Major Taylor Program is accepting donations of "gently used" bikes. What exactly does "gently used" mean? It means in relatively good condition (i.e. in need of a tune-up and/or small parts replacements, not major repairs). As you start to clean out the clutter this winter to make room for new gifts, or think about purchasing a new ride, please consider donating your old bike to our Earn-a-Bike program. It will be given to a student who does not have a bike, and they will fix it up while learning bicycle maintenance skills. We are looking for frame sizes for women and men 5'2"- 5'11". Contact Emma at mtpa@cascadebicycleclub.org or 206-957-6960. Please bring your donations to the Cascade office, preferably before the holiday closure, from Dec. 26 Jan. 2. We will be accepting the first 30 bikes at this time. Thank you! For the month of December, buy anything from Detours' D2R bag line off their website, enter the code CASCADE during check out, and not only will you get 25% off, but Detours will donate 25% of full retail value back to Cascade's youth programming. Wow! You can also join Cascade to take advantage of an array of member discounts at local bicycle-friendly businesses, with everything from gear and apparel at some of your favorite bike shops to discounted lodging for visiting relatives and reduced gym rates to work off those extra holiday pounds.
