Seattle’s Green Ribbon Commission Releases Climate Report
March 2006
Improving bicycle infrastructure should be a major focus of Seattle’s efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, according to a report released by the Green Ribbon Commission in March 2006. The panel was convened by Mayor Nickels to study ways for Seattle to meet the goals set forth in the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement between nations to reduce the release of greenhouse gasses and slow the disruption of earth’s climate.
The report recommends a number of steps that should be taken to improve the ease of bike-based transit in the Seattle area, including:
- Doubling the number of striped bike lanes
- Zoning for more bicycle parking
- Completing the urban bike trail system within ten years
In the weeks and months to come, Mayor Nickels will be reviewing the report’s recommendations and deciding which to implement.
With your help we can insure that these pro-bike policies are put into place. Please take a moment to send a letter to the mayor today, thanking him for his leadership and encouraging him to implement the bicycling portions of the Green Ribbon Commission report as soon as possible.
